Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate fuel cost for a truck trip?
- Divide trip miles by your truck's MPG to get gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. Add idle and reefer gallons (hours times gallons per hour) if you run them.
- What MPG does a semi truck get?
- Most loaded Class 8 trucks get roughly 5.5 to 7.5 MPG depending on weight, speed, terrain, weather and the truck's aerodynamics. Use your own fuel records for the most accurate number.
- How much fuel does a truck burn idling?
- A heavy-duty diesel commonly burns somewhere around half a gallon to a gallon per hour at idle, more at high idle or with heavy accessory load. Set the idle burn field to match your truck.
- What is fuel cost per mile?
- Total fuel cost divided by miles. At $3.75 diesel and 6.5 MPG it is about 58 cents a mile, which is why a small MPG gain adds up quickly over a year.
